A screenshot - a snapshot of a screen - is most often taken to show someone else. However, a photo taken using the Print Screen key also contains a lot of unnecessary things. It is advisable to remove unnecessary areas from the screenshot, especially when the weight of the image file is important or some private information is included in the image. The easiest way to do this is to use the standard Windows OS editor - it's called MS Paint.

You will need

  • Graphic editor MS Paint.

Instructions

Launch the graphics editor. IN latest versions Windows - 7 and Vista - to do this, just press the Win key, type pai and press Enter.

Upload the screenshot into Paint. If it's already saved, simply drag the file into the application window. If the screenshot was taken using the Print Screen button and is still on the clipboard, use the paste operation - press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + V.

To crop an image, you can use several functions of the graphics editor. If you need to reduce the height by cutting off bottom part, or make it narrower by removing the vertical rectangle on the right, you can use the function of changing image properties. To do this, click on the blue button at the upper left edge of the program window and select “Properties” from the menu. This command is assigned the “hot keys” Ctrl + E - you can use them too.

In the Image Properties window, change the numbers in the Width and Height fields. By default, these parameters are measured in points, but you can check the “centimeters” field - these units are more convenient if the screenshot is intended to be printed. Click OK and the image will be resized.

Another method allows you to more precisely select the area that should remain in the screenshot. This must be done using the selection tool. Open the “Select” drop-down menu on the “Home” tab and select “Rectangular Area”. Then, using the mouse, select the area that should be left and click on the “Crop” button - it is located in the menu to the right of the “Select” button. Paint will resize to fit the selection you specify.

You can leave not a rectangular area on the screenshot, but an area of any shape. To do this, instead of the “Rectangular area” item in the list of the “Select” button, select the “Custom area” item. Then use the mouse pointer to circle the desired area and click the “Delete” button. Paint will first erase everything that remains outside the outlined area, and then resize the image to fit the new dimensions of the screenshot.

Save the edited picture. The corresponding dialog is called up by pressing Ctrl + S. If you opened a screenshot from a file, Paint will do without prompting you for the name of the file and the location where it was saved, but will simply overwrite the original file.

Often, users need to take a shot on their computer in order to save its image for their own needs, or send it to another person. You can take a screenshot both using the built-in capabilities and when using additional programs.

Instructions

When you press PrtSc SysRq, nothing will change externally on the computer monitor, but a photo of the screen that was captured by the last click of the keyboard will be saved to the clipboard for later use.

Open a blank document and select the "paste" command or by pressing the key combination Ctrl + C. Change as you need. You can cut out unnecessary parts, make marks, etc. Save the file, giving it an appropriate name. You can also insert it into other editors, for example, into MS Word as an image, Photoshop.

By pressing the PrtScr SysRq key you will place the contents of the screen into the operating system's clipboard, and all you have to do is save it as an image file.

Even easier and more convenient than the screen with the help of special programs. Download the Gadwin PrintScreen Pro utility, install it on your computer and run it. The next time you turn on the computer, it will start automatically, but will not interfere with your work, being discreetly located in the tray.

Press the same PrtSc SysRq key. After clicking it, the program will immediately open the screen image that you got. How to take a screenshot on a computer if there is no Print Screen button

Many users are interested in how to take a photo of a laptop if the necessary Print Screen button is missing? To begin with, it’s still worth looking for it, because, as mentioned earlier, it can be called differently: Prt Scr, PrScr, or even just have a screen icon. The location of the key may also vary depending on the equipment. However, the oldest computers, which are still installed in many Russian offices, do not really have a Print Screen button. In this case, special programs will come to the rescue, with which you can easily take a screenshot of the screen on your computer or. Also, applications will be an excellent solution for those who simply want to reduce the time of creating and saving a screenshot.

There are a great many different programs for creating a screenshot, but it is best to immediately pay attention to the simplest and free apps, which have long proven themselves well among ordinary users. If you try to install the first program you come across on the Internet, there is a big risk of simply not understanding all its functions or, even worse, of catching a virus from a site where attackers operate. So, one of best apps Lightshot is considered to be of its kind. The program is quickly installed and integrated into the system, starting to run when it starts. In the settings, you can assign any key to take a screenshot, and after pressing it, the image is immediately saved to a folder convenient for the user. Thus, it is created in just one step.

You can use the closest analogue of Lightshot - the Screenshoter program, which has similar functionality and which also allows you to take a screenshot of the screen in one action. Snagit and Clip2net are quite good in terms of convenience, which also have their own image editor that allows you to quickly and easily process the resulting screen. However, there are also certain disadvantages to the method of photographing the screen using applications:

  • not compatible with all versions of Windows;

  • deterioration of system performance;

  • time required for development.

Alas, most programs do not actually work on the oldest computers, and if they are installed, they significantly slow down the system if the hardware configuration is weak. In addition, it will take some time to learn all the functions of the program and remember how to use it. However, in the future, the process of creating screenshots can be simplified tenfold. Thus, each user decides in his own way which method suits him best. If you rarely have to take a screenshot of the screen on your computer, it will be enough to remember the “Prt Scr + Paint” procedure, but if such a need arises every day, you should think about choosing a program that is suitable for convenience.

Do you need to take a screenshot of your computer screen and send it to a friend?

What are you going to do?

Oh I'm for it Lately I've seen so many crooked options... People use Paint, Word, print...

I'll show you a simple way to work with screenshots: take them, edit them and share them with others. And all this in a couple of clicks!

Old School (Old School)

Let's start with how to take a screenshot using Windows without installing anything on your computer.

1. Press the Prt Sc button on the keyboard:

As a rule - in the upper right corner.

2. Go to Paint (or Word) and paste (for example, Ctr + V):

3. Save the image (Ctr + S) as JPEG, GIF or PNG: the file will be much smaller than BMP.

That's it - the screenshot is ready!

A couple of lifehacks:

  • If you press Alt + Prt Sc instead of Prt Sc, you will take a screenshot not of the entire screen, but only of the active window.
  • In Windows 10, you can press Win + PrtSc and... the finished screen will be located in the folder C:\Users\Username\Images\Screenshots

But there is an alternative - Programs for screenshots!

I believe that a dedicated screenshot program is much more convenient than the Paint manipulation described above.

There are 5 important reasons, why screenshot programs are so convenient.

Reason #1. The photo is immediately sent to the editor

We hold down the hot keys and after a couple of seconds the screenshot is in front of us, open for editing:

This editor, of course, is not Photoshop, however, it can do a lot. At least it has all the functions I need.

Reason #2. Arrows!

It’s so convenient to show an element with an arrow:

When is it needed?

  • Explain to the remote designer which icon you want to redraw.
  • Explain to your younger sister from another city which button to press to launch the program.

And much more! You've probably already noticed from the articles on this blog that I actively use arrows, especially when I'm writing an instructional article.

Reason #3. You can cover up personal data

Often you need to send some kind of supporting picture, but the picture includes your address, bank account, details of your friends and children.

Just cover it up in the same editor! It smears well - nothing is visible.

Reason #4. We capture only part of the screen

For example, we need to cut a graph from a page:

Why send someone an entire screenshot when you can only send required element. For example, as in this example, a graph.

Hold down the left mouse button, select a rectangular area and release - that's it - this is the area that will be displayed in the editor.

A couple of clicks, 10 seconds, and we have a ready-made link to our screen in our hands:

All screenshot programs can do this

Why then are there so many of them on the market? There are some differences.

We selected 5 popular editors for Windows and went through their main functions.

1. Joxi (link)

The free version is full-fledged. Still, filling 1 GB with screenshots is almost impossible. And the screenshot weighs no more than 20 MB. Well, and the fact that the storage time is limited to months... To be honest, I have never had a single case where I needed an old screenshot that was taken some time ago...

2. Clip2Net (link)

Here is the situation with free version similar, but slightly worse. Filling up 100 MB with screenshots is a very real situation. However, a Russian person will most likely open a second account - that’s all.

3. LightShot (link)

There is a button for quick creation galleries of screenshots.

5. PicPick (link)

To make it more convenient for you to choose, we made the following table in Google Docs:

We will try to keep this table up to date.

What do I use to take a screenshot on my laptop?

After going through 2-3 screenshots, I settled on Monosnap.

Let's take a look at its interface...

1 - Undo last operation

2 - Revert the last canceled operation

3 - Settings, where you can:

  • send the picture for printing,
  • copy it to the clipboard,
  • add a shadow to the final image,
  • turn it counterclockwise or clockwise,
  • And so on.

4 - Change font or line color

5 – Change line thickness or font size

6 - Draw an arrow

7 - Draw a frame (for example, to highlight some area

8 - Draw a straight line

9 – Draw an oval (taxi again to highlight something)

10 - Scratch with a pencil

11 - Write something

12 — Arrow with inscription

13 - Obfuscate (for example, important information or password)

14 – Crop the image to the desired size

15 – Just reduce the size of the picture

17 - Upload the picture to the server - and a link to your screenshot is automatically copied to your clipboard. As I already wrote, it’s so convenient to send it to your interlocutor

18 — Change the file name (and it is generated by itself, randomly)

What you don't like:

  • It writes video, but I can’t get it to record the entire screen - the edges are cut off, so I switched to ShareX to record video messages.
  • Sometimes you need to take a snapshot not of the screen, but of the entire long page (with scrolling). And this function is missing. Among the competitors, only PicPick and programs that were not included in the list, for example, Jing, have such a function.

But overall, I’m 95% satisfied and don’t plan to look for something else))

By the way, I wrote about how to create GIFs.

P.S.

Outside the competition, I studied in detail an expensive solution - the Snagit program. What are we paying $50 for?

  • More advanced arrows (you can bend them in an arc, change the “front” and “butt” of the arrow)
  • Lots of special effects (torn edges, etc.)
  • You can take a screenshot in the form of a gif (when it is important to record not a specific moment, but a few simple actions)
  • You can take a long screenshot (for example, the entire site, which needs to be scrolled down. Moreover, the program will scroll itself)
  • You can take a panoramic screenshot. That is, also long, but narrower in width
  • I was also pleased with the macro function - you can record a certain sequence of actions, for example, outline the edges, add a watermark, etc. And then set it up so that all subsequent screenshots are run through this macro.
  • A bunch of ready-made high-quality pictures: stars, watches, emoticons and so on.

For myself, I realized that this is more of a solution for bloggers, streamers and other content producers. For those who want to quickly and without much worry produce a large number of nice screenshots.

For ordinary people, perhaps, it’s too much.

But overall, of course, I really liked the program.

Total

All screenshot programs are approximately the same and convenient. Choose!

Write in the comments!

How do you take screenshots? What program do you use or maybe you do everything the old fashioned way?

P.S.

If Anna and I made a mistake somewhere and “slandered” your favorite screenshot, write in the comments. The comparison table will be constantly updated.

Screen (screenshot). On the Internet you can often see screenshots of the entire desktop, individual windows, or even arbitrary areas of the screen. This short article will tell you how to take a screenshot or so-called screenshot quickly and without unnecessary problems.

How to take a screenshot of the entire screen

Taking a screenshot (screenshot) of your entire desktop at once is quite simple. For this it is necessary press the Print Screen (Prt Scrn) key. Typically, this key is located in the upper right part of the keyboard, next to keys such as Scroll Lock and Pause Break. After pressing the Print Screen button, a screenshot of the screen will be taken and placed on the clipboard.

In order to get a screenshot as a finished image, you need to save it. Any graphics editor is suitable for this. However, the easiest way is to use regular Paint. Open Paint and paste the screenshot from the clipboard using the Ctrl-V keyboard shortcut. After this, the picture can be saved as a file. It is better to use PNG format for saving. This will allow you to get the highest quality images with the minimum file size.

How to take a screenshot of a single window

If many people know how to take a screenshot, then many users are not even aware of the next method of taking screenshots. To take a screenshot of a separate window, you can use the key combination Alt + Print Screen. Pressing Alt keys and Print Screen you get a snapshot of only one active window, that is, the window that is open and currently in use. This method of taking screenshots is especially useful when you need to take a screenshot of only one program, and the rest running programs should not be included in the photo.

After using this combination, a screenshot of the active window will be saved to the clipboard. Next, as in the previous case, the screenshot must be inserted into a graphics editor and saved as a picture.

How to take a screenshot of an arbitrary area of the screen

In order to take a screenshot of an arbitrary area of the screen, you need to use the program for creating screenshots “Scissors”. This program is included with Windows 7 and can be launched from the Start menu. To launch it, go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - Snipping Tool.

The scissors program is a very convenient application that allows you to take screenshots of any part of the screen, add comments and notes to the screenshot, and immediately save the result as a picture in PNG formats, GIF and JPG. Using the Scissors program, you will no longer need to save screenshots using a graphic editor; you can do this directly from the program.

After launching the Scissors program, you will be asked to select the area of the screen from which you want to take a photo; this can be done using the mouse. Once the desired area of the screen is selected, it will be copied into the Snipping Tool program, where you can do basic editing of the resulting image.

The following tools are available in this program:

  • Pen - with it you can add handwritten notes directly on the resulting screenshot;
  • Marker is a tool for highlighting important elements in the image;
  • The eraser is a tool for removing inscriptions made using the Pen and Marker tools;
  • Send snippet— sending the received image by email;
  • Copy - copy the received image to the clipboard;
  • Create fragment— a tool for creating a new photo;

After you have finished working with the Scissors program, you can save the screenshot as a file by using the “Save” button.

How to take screenshots easier

If you need to regularly take screenshots of your screen, it is better to install a special program to create them. Such a program can greatly simplify the process. We described several such programs in the article ““.

One of best programs this kind is DuckCapture program.

DuckCapture allows you to:

  • Create screenshots of a single window, a selected area, or the entire screen at once;
  • Create screenshots of individual window elements or the entire scrolling window;
  • Finely control the process of creating images using settings and a pop-up window;
  • Create screenshots with a few mouse clicks or using standard keyboard shortcuts;
  • Automatically save received screenshots;
  • Save received images in BMP, PNG and JPG formats;
  • Work in the background;
  • Automatically load when the operating system starts;

Wherein this program absolutely free. It's possible.

The main purpose of the key Print Screen- This is copying the contents of your monitor screen to the clipboard. In popular parlance, “take a screenshot.” You press a key, a screenshot is created and by pressing the key combination Ctrl+V, in any graphic editor, the resulting screenshot is recreated. But what to do if the Print Screen key does not work?

There can be at least three reasons for this: a malfunction of the key itself, the lack of a driver for the keyboard, or the absence of a key on the keyboard.

The first problem is almost impossible to fix at home. But if the Print Screen key does not work due to elementary contact with water, then simply remove it from the keyboard and dry the place where it is installed. In the future, try to avoid writing at the computer.

The driver is only required for multimedia keyboards. Multimedia keyboards are those that have additional keys on their body quick access to programs or some actions.

Of course, they are much more convenient than regular keyboards, but they have one a big problem– keys F1-F12 , and PrtSc And Insert They don't work in some programs. This is because they are configured to only perform shortcut functions for certain operations.

For example, the Print Screen key we need executes the command to send a document to print. This problem cannot be fixed without installation disk with drivers, which usually comes with the keyboard. If there is none, then try to find drivers on the Internet, having previously found out the name of the manufacturer and model of the keyboard itself.

The absence of the Print Screen key is most often observed on laptops or netbooks. Manufacturers are trying to make devices more compact, which is why they sacrifice some keyboard keys. This problem can be solved using the “on-screen keyboard”, which can be found and launched through the Start menu ( Start menu - All Programs - Accessories - Accessibility - Screen keyboard ). It will launch in the form of a dialog box with keys, among which you will find the required PrtScn key.

As an alternative, you can install special screen capture programs. Earlier on the site we already wrote about some of them (,). They are convenient because they do not take a picture of the entire screen, but only the area that you need. And you won’t have to waste time processing the resulting image in a graphics editor.

In my opinion, using specialized programs to capture the screen is much better than taking screenshots using the Print Screen key. It's more convenient and faster. But I want to disappoint fans of computer games - not all such programs work in running games. Therefore, before installing one of them, carefully read its description and functionality. But the good old Print Screen performs its direct functions in all games without exception.

This is not the first year that I have been using screenshots in my work (for example, to maintain this blog), so I am sharing with you a modest, but still practical experience. I I recommend reading about all the solutions because everyone has their own unique advantages and by learning about them, you will find the most convenient way for yourself.

How to take a screenshot on a laptop using PrtScrn?

  • For Mac OS X:

The process is described in detail on macspoon; I see no point in copying it here. Thanks to the authors for the note :)

  • For Windows 8 and later:

When you press two keys ( Win+PrtScrn) a screenshot of the entire screen will be taken, after which it will be automatically saved to the folder Documents/Images/Screenshots/ . Convenient, in my opinion.

  • For Windows 7 and earlier:

Everything is a little different: pressing the PrtScrn key creates a screenshot, but it must be inserted into any graphic editor. For example, standard Paint. Open it, click CTRL+V(or "PEdit" - "Paste"), after which the screenshot will appear in the program and you can save it in a format convenient for you ( CTRL+S or “File” - “Save as...”).

For all Windows versions There is also a command: Alt+PrtScrn. It takes a screenshot not of the entire screen, but only of the active window (i.e., click the mouse on the desired window, and then press this key combination). Useful if, for example, you need to capture not the entire desktop, but only the contents of an open folder.

How to take a screenshot using the program?

If it so happens that you cannot take a screenshot of the screen on your laptop using the first method (It happens that you don’t have the PrintScreen key, or you just didn’t like this option), then there is a free program that I think is the best and I will try to show you, Why.

Monosnap (Download for Windows/Mac)

  1. It has a built-in (albeit simple) image editor that automatically opens after you take a screenshot. Plus, you can load any images into it for editing (shading, cropping, markings, etc.), not just screenshots.
  2. This is the only free program that allows you to add shadows to the edges of an image. Not as beautiful as in Mac OS X, of course, but still. Yes, it doesn’t matter to some, but I’m one of those who appreciates such things.
    You can, for example, click on any image in this note: in my opinion, it looks beautiful with a shadow against the background of the site
  3. You can assign keys (or combinations thereof) that are convenient for you, with which you can take a screenshot of the screen on your laptop at any convenient time. For example, I take a screenshot by pressing PrintScreen, and you can set, say, the key combination CTRL+1, or some other one that you like. Standard methods cannot provide such flexibility. The following functions are available for configuration:

How to take a screenshot of the browser screen on a laptop?

If the previous 2 methods are so good, then why do I still suggest installing browser plugins? Because with their help you can take a screenshot of the entire page. Let's say we take a screenshot of a laptop screen with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels and want to “photograph” the browser window. When using the previous two methods, we will only save what we see ourselves now. What if everything you need doesn’t fit on the screen? This is where plugins come in!

Compare for yourself:

For Chrome/Amigo/Yandex.Browser/Nichrome/Opera and others made on the Chromium engine, a plugin would be an excellent option Nimbus Screenshot. Firefox is also supported.

Conclusion

I hope I was able to clarify the situation with the screenshots. I myself use the Monosnap + Nimbus combination, and I am very pleased. This allows me to prepare all the images for the notes on this blog, and for everyday needs these two solutions are even more sufficient.

That’s probably all, but for you, friends, I wish to capture a lot of important and valuable things for you. Good luck! 🙂
