Changing the appearance of icons in Windows. Launching Windows programs with the specified parameters in the shortcut How to find Windows 10 small icons parameter

Every day we use different computer programs to perform a wide variety of tasks. Some of them have a large number of settings and capabilities, and to take advantage of them all, you need to perform a lot of manipulations. For example, you regularly use several operating modes of the application, enter your username and password, or use special modes. In addition to office workers, computer game lovers often need such opportunities. All these manipulations can take a significant amount of effort and time, and are simply annoying.

Reflecting application start conditions in a shortcut simplifies working with programs.

It is worth noting that such a need, which was mentioned above, arises extremely rarely, and for the most part is solved effortlessly by the application or game settings themselves.

Based on this, the whole question should be considered only as additional opportunity for extended software launch, because the feasibility of such actions is questionable, and they certainly will not save time for the user.

The Windows operating system provides each user with the opportunity to specify launch parameters in the program shortcut. As part of the issue under consideration, instead of switching between menu items, you can create several shortcuts with the necessary parameters once, place them on the desktop or taskbar, and in Windows 8 and 10 and on home screen, and launch the program with the necessary parameters with one click of a button.

All these parameters are written in shortcuts, which are special files with a link to the executable file. You do not need to go to the folder where the software is installed each time and look for the launch file. In this article we will look at how to significantly expand your capabilities when working with software and learn how to set launch parameters in command line shortcut on the desktop. We will divide the entire procedure into two stages.

Stage 1. Select the executable file and transfer the shortcut to the desktop

Despite the fact that in the vast majority of cases, when installing software, the launch icon is placed on the desktop, in some cases this does not happen. Then you need to find the executable file yourself. How?

  1. When installing an application, pay close attention to which folder the installer prompts you to select. Typically this is C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). Most developers provide the opportunity to independently select the default folder, but if you do not change the proposed option, the program will be installed in the specified folder.
  2. Through Windows Explorer, go to the directory where you installed software and find the startup file. It has the extension exe. Often its name coincides with the name of the software itself. If you can’t decide, try to find out this information on the developer’s official website in the help section or in the service technical support.
  3. Right-click on the file name and select the “Create Shortcut” function.
  4. Confirm the system prompt “Windows cannot create a shortcut in this folder. Should I place it on my desktop?”

If you don’t remember in which folder the software is installed, you can do the following:

  1. Go to the Start menu, find the software you need in the list (you can even use the search function to speed up the process).
  2. Right-click on the name and select Send - Desktop (create shortcut).

If you use Windows 10, the procedure will be slightly different:

  1. Go to start screen by pressing the Start button.
  2. Find the program launch icon in the list of all applications or on the home screen.
  3. Right-click, select Advanced - Go to file location.
  4. After the Windows Explorer window opens, copy the icon to your desktop via the context menu or simply by dragging it to the desired location.

Step 2: Specify startup options

After we have successfully transferred the icon to the desktop, we will begin specifying the necessary parameters in its properties. To do this you need:

  1. Right-click on the icon and select “Properties”.
  2. In the menu that opens, go to the “Shortcut” tab and find the “Object” line. You will see that the input field in it is active. This is where we will enter the necessary commands.
  3. After entering the required data at the bottom of the window, click Apply - OK.

What commands to write

Having figured out how to write launch commands, let's try to figure out what exactly to write. Unfortunately, there are no universal commands that work for absolutely all programs. Therefore, if you want to create shortcuts for quick launch with the specified parameters, you will have to study the program help or contact the developer technical support service.

Very often such information is indicated on the official forums of the application or game. More experienced users or representatives of developers or copyright holders publish detailed information there.

Returning to what was said at the beginning of this article. Specifying parameters became most relevant during the period of mass interest in the game called “Counter-Strike”. Why this interest has become so widespread specifically in “CS” is an ambiguous question; some used it solely for entertainment, others (like, for example, some professional players) in order to individualize the gameplay as much as possible.

For example, here is a list of options for the game "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" that some users use when starting:

Parameter Meaning
-novidDisabling the introductory video
-w 640 -h 480Installing the extension
-consoleConsole activation
-freq 120Setting a screen refresh rate limit
-highRun with higher priority
-condebugSaving logs
-lowRun with reduced priority
-noaafontsDisable antialiasing
-nosyncDeactivating Vsync
-fullscreenRun in full screen mode
-language EnglishSetting the language

Conclusion

To what extent the given procedure is appropriate and relevant for the middle of 2019 is up to everyone to decide for themselves, and in the comments we invite you to discuss this topic, as well as talk about what programs you are launching, indicating the launch parameters. This data may be useful to someone.

Desktop icons are necessary for quick access To necessary programs. Inexperienced users do not think about the possibility of changing their settings, for example, increasing or decreasing the size. In Windows 10, it’s easy to change desktop icons, you just need to read the instructions. Users can use several methods to help customize icons to suit their needs.

How to change icon settings

The external display of shortcuts is easy to change, because the operating system offers several options for displaying shortcuts: small, standard and large. A person must place the cursor on a free area of the desktop, and then click on the right mouse button and select “View”. All that remains is to activate the required parameter to change the current size of the desktop icons Windows desktop 10.

In addition, the “View” section provides the following options:

  1. Hiding shortcuts. The person will free up the entire workspace.
  2. Align objects.
  3. Arrange.

Using the method described above, it is not difficult to reduce the icons on your desktop in Windows 10. To use other functions, you will need to click on “View” and then activate the required option. A check mark will appear next to it if it is enabled.

There is another one convenient way change the size of elements. To do this, click on a free area on the desktop and go to the “Screen” section. Under the inscription “Change text, applications and other elements,” you should move the slider. By default it is 100%, but a person has the ability to adjust the parameters.

The size of the elements changes depending on the position of the slider.

How to fine-tune icon size

Sometimes users want to customize thumbnails to suit their preferences, but they are not satisfied with the standard sizes. To make fine adjustments, you should hold down “CTRL” and at this moment roll the mouse wheel. If you move it down, then the value will become smaller. As you move up, the icons will become larger. In this case, 20 variations from smallest to largest become available.

If the laptop does not have a strip that replaces the mouse wheel, then this method won't do. There is a way out of the situation: connect a mouse to the device and follow the diagram described above.

Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut:

  • To do this, you will have to hold down Shift+CTRL+1 at the same time. After this, the elements will become large.
  • If desired, you can use the combination Shift+CTRL+2 to make them slightly smaller in size.
  • Another combination of Shift+CTRL+3 gives standard dimensions. If you simultaneously hold down Shift+CTRL+4, then all elements on the desktop will become small.

Setting up custom icon personalization

If desired, a person can change the appearance of the miniature. To do this, you will be able to use the options offered by the system, or upload your own images.

Procedure:

  1. You must select the desired object and then click on the right mouse button. In the menu that appears, click on “Properties”.
  2. Now you are interested in the “Shortcut” section - “Change icon”.
  3. You will be able to select system images, but if necessary, you will be able to upload your own.
  4. After selecting the desired image, you must click “Ok” and repeat this action again.

If everything worked out correctly, then the appearance of the object will change. If necessary, you can return everything back using the instructions described above.

How to add and remove your own thumbnails

It is also useful to consider the process of adding a thumbnail. You can download it from the World Wide Web or prepare it yourself. To do this, again, you will have to carry out the following actions: click on “Properties” - “Shortcut” - “Change icon”. Now you should activate “Browse” and specify the address to the desired picture.

Sometimes people are not happy with the result, so they want to return everything to the way it was. To do this, you will have to select the following function in the section: “Restore default values”.

By following the instructions above, anyone can make the icons unique by customizing their image and size. If necessary, you can always return the previous appearance, so you don’t have to be afraid to experiment. The main thing is to strictly adhere to the procedure in order to achieve a good result.

Having released a new operating Windows system 10, Microsoft gave it many new features and significantly redesigned the system. Desktop icons have also undergone changes. Many users are accustomed to the old icons that were present on Windows 7. Therefore, non-standard icons after the transition to the new Windows 10 did not appeal to many PC users. IN new Windows 10 they can be easily changed for any shortcut on the desktop. In this material we will describe all the ways to change icons in Windows 10. In addition, we will describe the process of creating new icons.

Changing the icons of the main desktop shortcuts

Basic desktop shortcuts include links such as " This computer», « Control Panel», « Basket" To change these icons, you need to go to the " Options» to links « CUSTOMIZATION/Themes».

Now let's try to change the shortcut " Basket" To do this, select the trash can and click on the Change icon button.

In the list of shortcuts that appears, we will select the one we like and confirm our decision with the Apply button. Below is a basket with a different image.

Users can also use icons not from the standard Windows 10 libraries, but from third-party sources. One such source is the free icon pack " Open Icon Library" You can download this package on its official website https://sourceforge.net/projects/openiconlibrary. After downloading and unpacking the archive, about 10 thousand icons of various formats will be available to you. To use them from the “Open Icon Library”, click on the same button Change icon for the recycle bin shortcut. In the window that appears, click on the Browse button. . . . After that, select one of the “Open Icon Library” shortcuts. Below is a cart using images from the Open Icon Library.

Which Windows 10 desktop shortcuts can be changed?

The main desktop elements for which you can change icons are shortcuts (links to programs, files and folders) and folders. Let's describe an example of changing the icon in Google Chrome. To do this, go to the properties of the browser shortcut.

Now if we click on the button Change icon. . ., then we will have four options for choosing an icon.

From the example it is clear that when we get to the icon selection list window, the same window appears in front of us as in the first example. The only difference is that all icons are taken not from the system library, but from the executable file “chrome.exe”. In this window, just like in the first example, you can select an icon from “ Open Icon Library"or any other.

Now let's look at changing the icon for folders on the desktop. For example, we will create a folder named “Icon” on the desktop. After creating it, we will go to its properties on the “ tab Settings».

On this tab, click on the button that is already familiar to us Change icon. . .. After this action, the same window will appear in front of us, as in the previous examples.

The principle of replacing folder icons with a third-party one, and not from the “shell32.dll” library, is the same as in the previous examples.

We create icons ourselves

For this example we will use the program IcoFX. This program can Easily create various icons from bitmaps. For this example we will take free photo from the site https://pixabay.com. This site has thousands of free images.

We will also download and install the program IcoFX. After that, open the IcoFX program, and also open our image in it.

When opening an image, the utility prompts us to make a choice. We will focus on the option " Create an icon from the image" This option will open our image in a reduced resolution, which can be saved for use as an icon.

Once you select the appropriate icon size, you can save it. In our case, the size is 256 × 256. It is saved in the “*ico” file format. Below is an example of a Shortcut user shortcut with our icon.

Using IcoFX, you can create various icons from raster and vector images, which are located on the desktop.

Setting label sizes

Changing the size of desktop shortcuts is quite easy. To do this, go to the active desktop and right-click on it. After this action, a context menu will open in which you need to go to the line “ View».

As you can see in the image above, you can make the size large, regular, and small. This setting allows you to adjust the size for monitors with different resolutions and diagonals. For example, for large monitors you can reduce the size of the labels, and for small diagonals you can make them larger. It is also worth noting that in the “View” item you can pin shortcuts in a grid and pin them automatically to the desktop.

Finally

After reading this article, you will learn how easy it is to change icons in Windows 10. In addition, the article shows how you can create icons from bitmap images yourself. We hope the material will help our readers change icons in Windows 10, as well as create new ones.

you can find ready files icons with different designs on third-party resources and download them from there, and then install them using any of the methods presented below, depending on the type of icon (folder, application shortcut or main Windows icon). To search, use or Yandex: enter the request “Desktop icons for Windows 10” in the line. The variety of icons available for download on the Internet is quite large: copyrighted, themed, standard for certain versions of Windows, etc.

You can change the icons for all shortcuts at once using an icon pack - a separate collection of icons packaged in one file with dll extension. Such packages can also be downloaded from various sources. However, be careful when searching for and downloading such files: trust sites that indicate that the files have been scanned by an antivirus. Otherwise, you risk downloading a malicious program along with the file.

  2. You will immediately be taken to the desired tab- “Shortcut”. Click on the middle button “Change icon”.
In the “Shortcut” section, click on the “Change Icon” button
  3. A window similar to the one in the instructions for changing the folder icon will appear on the display. Here, however, there will not be such a large selection of icons. We specify not the system library as the source, but the executable file chrome.exe. We make a choice, for example, in favor of the original yellow icon. Click on OK.
Select an icon from the available ones or upload your own file with the ico extension
  4. In the shortcut properties window, first click “Apply”. The system will ask permission to make changes. Click on the “Continue” button.
Click on the “Continue” button to save all changes
  5. After that, click on OK - the window will close and the icon icon will change.
  6. If you want to change the shortcut icon to your own, use the Browse button to upload your own file with a third-party image.

How to create an icon yourself

If you want to set your image (drawn or downloaded from any site) with a png or jpg extension as an icon, you need to reduce its size if necessary using the standard Windows utilities Paint, and then convert it to an ico file using special services - converters.

An easier way is to use the services of online and software icon generators, which are already configured to create files with a specific format and other parameters, for example, image sizes. For example, let's take the IcoFX program, which combines an icon generator and a tool for drawing and editing pictures. It is paid, but its developer, IcoFX Software, provides 30 days free use. We'll tell you how to use it in the instructions:

  • We launch the installer and select the language in the small window that appears. Unfortunately, there is no Russian there, so we put in English. Click on OK, and in the next window we agree to the terms of use of the application. Click on Install.
  • We wait for the installation to finish, then click Finish in the window with the checkbox next to Launch IcoFX.
  • In the utility window select Windows partition Icon From Image if you already have an image.
On the program's home page, click on Windows Icon From Image if you want to download an image
  • Select the file with the image in Explorer.

A page will open with a set of tools for editing the image.
  • You will probably want to remove the background and leave only the item itself for the icon. To remove it, click on the magic wand in the left panel called Magic Wand.
Click on the Magic Wand on the left vertical panel
  • Double-click on the background and a dotted line will appear. In the left panel, select a paint tool, for example, Brush. On the right side of the window, click on the tile with the chessboard color.
In the right panel, select a tile with a checkerboard pattern to make the background transparent
  • Draw a brush over the area delimited by the dotted line. After this, the background will also change to an image with a checkerboard coloring. This will mean that it is transparent.
  • IN top menu select File, and then click Save as.
Click Save to save the edited image
  • We choose a place to store the icon and give it a name. Click on “Save”.
Find the folder in which you want to save the future icon and click on “Save”
  • If you want to draw the future icon yourself, click on New Windows Icon in the initial window. In the next window, decide on the quality of the colors (it’s better to set True Color) and the size of the icon.
Select the size and color quality of the future drawing
  • In the editor we draw an icon using the available tools: brush, pencil, fill and others. If you want it to be even, use Line.
  • When the drawing is ready, save it using the Save as option in the File menu and set it as an icon.
  • If you are no longer attracted by the look of old icons on the “Desktop”, change them either to other classic icons for Windows, or to your own - any small images in ico format found on the Internet or drawn yourself. To change icons you can use them as built-in icons Windows tools, and third-party applications.

Windows 10 makes it easy to customize the appearance of your desktop. To access personalization settings, right-click anywhere on your desktop and select Personalization from the context menu. The personalization settings screen will open.

Below are the elements of the personalization screen, and just below the image are their descriptions.

    1. Background

Here you can select and customize your desktop background.

    2. Colors

Here you can change the color of places like the taskbar and Start menu. By default, Windows 10 will use a color based on the background image. However, you can disable this feature if you prefer to use a different color.

    3. Lock screen

Here you can customize the appearance of your lock screen. Just like the desktop background, you can use default images or set a custom image.

    4. Themes

If you used themes on earlier Windows versions, you can view and select them here. However, Microsoft currently has no plans to release new themes for Windows 10.

    5. Start

Here you can configure some settings for the Start menu.

    6. Review

Click Browse to choose a background image from your computer for your desktop.

    To change the font size:

If you have trouble seeing text on your screen, you can increase the font size. Increasing the font size will also increase the size of icons and other elements on your desktop.

    To configure ClearType settings:

ClearType technology allows you to customize the display of text on the screen, which will help improve readability.
