The Skagen is controversially Fossil's smartest wristwatch. It has a sporty, minimalist, classic look that will appeal to those who like the more streamlined look of their Apple Watch. It has a 40mm case, which is similar in many ways to the Falster, but there is a big difference.

Falster 2 is packed with features. From GPS to NFC to heart rate, it's all here for you. And with interchangeable 20mm straps, you can swap between something more comfortable for the night and something more harmonious for training.

There is one not-so-good detail here: the heart rate sensor is not reliable. However, the Falster 2 is one of the best looking and smartest watches you can buy.

If you're an iPhone owner and want a new smartwatch, the new Apple Watch Series 4 isn't your only choice. Yes, it's a fantastic wearable, and our current watch fave, but it's not for everyone, and hardly the most wallet-friendly.

Luckily, there are a number of iOS-compatible smartwatches on the market with features that Cupertino hasn't yet included in the device.

Plus, of course, Wear OS is compatible with iOS, as well the latest smartphones Gear from Samsung. Thus, iPhone users have many options to choose from.

The good news is that all of these watches have a smooth design, built-in GPS, heart rate monitoring and NFC for Google Pay. There is also a new watch coming into Casio with the Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 launching towards the end of 2018.

So there's a lot to look forward to, and you can bet there will be plenty of announcements before the end of the year.

If Samsung or Wear OS don't do it for you, then there's always the latest Fitbit smartwatch to consider. And, if we're honest, it's easy to observe that people make the most mistakes for the Apple Watch when we have it on our wrists.

And like the Watch Series 4, it's all about fitness. So it has a waterproof design, as well as swim tracking and a built-in heart rate monitor to measure your workout intensity. However, it doesn't have built-in GPS - for that you'll need to pay a little more and get a Fitbit Ionic.

You can also expect the usual Fitbit fitting tracking features, including arguably the best sleep monitoring features of any worn-out wrist.

As for the main functions of the smartwatch, it supports notifications for messages and third party applications(with answers available if you are connected to Android phone), and has a built-in music player that supports Deezer, and if you live in the US, Pandora too (note that these can only be played offline). You can download apps from Fitbit's growing app store, and also support contactless payment through Fitbit Pay (another note: if you're in the US, you'll need to get the dedicated payment version).

Unlike Apple's smart laptop, it works with Android, iOS and Windows smartphones, and with up to 5 days of battery life, you don't have to charge it every night. It's a strong alternative, and one that will improve as Fitbit builds on the strong array of sensors it loads internally - with sleep apnea detection expected to be on the way.

Garmin Vivomove HR

Like the Steel HR below, the Vivomove HR is a sporty hybrid that packs a lot of features into one. Unlike the Vivomove, Garmin's new hybrid is available in unisex and women's designs and includes a sleek discrete display that appears on the watch face when you give it a tap.

On this screen you can see a whole raft of information, including fitness tracking data, heart rate pulse, smartphone notifications and even let you check your stress levels.

If you're concerned about battery life, it's a fine performer, offering two weeks of browsing time and about five days of regularly hitting all those smartwatch features.

Nokia Steel HR

Giving the Apple Watch a run for its money in terms of wellness technology, the Nokia Steel HR is a serious fitness tracker disguised as a classic Swiss watch. The optical heart rate sensor provides decent analysis of your daily heart rate and tracks your heart rate over time—perhaps better than the Apple Watch in this department.

And even though it's an analog watch, it's not without a screen. The discreet OLED panel displays relevant health statistics and some notifications so you won't miss a call.

Of course, without GPS, the Steel HR doesn't track Apple's outdoor, cycling, and workout smartwatch, but it does offer automatic exercise detection and will monitor your heart rate during a session and count it toward your daily goal. It's also a great sleep tracker that fills the hole left wide open by the Apple Watch, and it offers 25 days of tracking on a single charge. It's a different proposition, but those primarily interested in the Apple Watch as a fitness tracker will do well to consider the Steel HR. Just keep in mind that Nokia has now sold its digital security arm to Withings, so the rebranding works.

Ticwatch E

With the passing of Pebble, the Ticwatch E is now our plucky smartwatch launch choice. Previously, we recommended the feature-rich Ticwatch 2 with independent Ticwear OS, as well as GPS, heart rate, etc. This still works for those looking for something left, but we will now switch our official support to the new Ticwatch E.

It runs the Wear operating system and strips features down to a bare minimum, but at a reasonable $159.99 it's a solid alternative to the Apple Watch. It has a 1.4-inch OLED display with a crisp 400x400 resolution, which matches the Apple Watch screen well.

The design is fun and quirky, and it's a great relief from the monotony of the same old brands, but with the confidence and stability of Wear OS under the hood. If you don't mind waiting a few months, you can also explore the upcoming Ticwatch Pro, which will debut on some fancy screens.

LG Watch Sport

The next stop on your journey of Apple Watch alternatives should be our recommended all-in-one Wear OS, the LG Watch Sport. It's the flagship device for the updated Wear 2.0, with rugged trainers and built-in GPS, a full and untethered experience from your phone over LTE, not to mention NFC for payments. If you still want to make a Smartwatch, then you can do much worse than beautiful and smart flagship smartphone LG.

Garmin Vivoactive 3

Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45

Yes, it's the most expensive Wear OS out there by some distance, but if you want a luxury smartwatch around your wrist, it doesn't get much better than this.

The second Tag Connected looks like a classic beginner tag, with top-notch build quality and plenty of impressively detailed custom clocks. Wearing OS is something that works, but definitely takes up more back seats than Wear alternatives from LG, Motorola and co. With NFC and GPS on board, you're well taken care of what you need.

Michael Kors Access Sofie

If you want a good looking Wear OS smartwatch, Fossil is currently serving some of the best options right now. And his Michael Kors Access collection is definitely the pieces that stand out above the rest.

The men's (Grayson) and women's (Sofie) versions both feature a 1.39-inch touchscreen AMOLED display with a diagonal of 454x454 pixels and work in latest version operating room Google systems Smartwatch. This means you'll be able to enjoy features like the ability to download apps, customizable viewing faces, and access to Google Assistant.

There are no sports tracking features and unfortunately NFC is missing too, which means you can't buy things with this smartwatch. But it gives you the basic Wear OS experience, wrapped in a design you really need around your wrist. As we mentioned, the new Michael Kors Access Wear watch is also on the way and adds a bunch of great features. So it might be worth spending on a new collection.

Kate Spade New York Scallop

The best sign that smartwatches for women are getting better, the Kate Spade New York Scallop is as great as it comes. The 1.19-inch AMOLED display is housed in a 42mm body, making it the same size as the larger Apple Watch, but the Scallop has a nicer design.

What you don't get is so many features - it's particularly lacking in the fitness department if that's important to you, but what it does do is good. You have the Wear operating system and all its standard features and apps at your disposal, plus plenty of Kate Spade-designed designs to give your watch that extra personal touch.

Apple watches are not the first in their class, however, they have become a driving force in the market, encouraging everyone to develop their projects with great effort.

The branded smart watch Apple Watch is a companion device for the iPhone, it allows you to read and send SMS, view notifications, messages and mail, monitor your health, play games and much more. The cost of branded “Apple” watches ranges from 350 to 1100 dollars (not counting luxury versions made of precious metals). However, the watch also has a number of disadvantages - battery life, price, inability to work in tandem with Android gadgets. As we said above, the Apple Watch did not appear on the market before everyone else; before them, there were already smart watches from Samsung, Motorola, LG and Pebble. Second generation Moto 360 smartwatch

Thanks to its energy-efficient display, Toq can operate in offline mode up to 5 days. The device is charged wirelessly by placing the watch on a special docking station. Made possible through private investment on Kickstarter, the Pebble E-Paper Watch gadget is, in a sense, the golden mean in the line of various smart watches. To fully work with the watch, it must first be connected via bluetooth to a smartphone: the main setup of the watch, accounts, and other things is done from the smartphone, in Pebble’s own application.

Korean designer Won Rii has developed a Vachen smart watch that not only connects to iPhone and Android smartphones and notifies you of new emails, SMS and calls, but can also change the screen style.

i’m Watch is made in monolithic aluminum housing measuring 40.6x52.9 mm and 1 cm thick. The dimensions of the gadget are quite impressive, and the watch will not look harmonious on every wrist. Inside the gadget there is a processor operating at a frequency of 400 MHz, 128 MB random access memory and a 4 GB drive for storing user data.

The entire front part of the device is occupied by a 1.5-inch (240x240) touch display. The screen is covered with protective glass, which ensures its safety during operation, but at the same time significantly reduces viewing angles - this is facilitated by the slight curvature of the coating.

After synchronization with a smartphone - the gadget connects via Bluetooth to devices on Android and iOS - i’m Watch informs the user about incoming calls received on mobile device, allow you to read emails and SMS, view updates on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and also receive comprehensive information about the state of the body during sports (optional sensors are required).
