Nokia 5 fast charging. What is in the box

The revived Nokia is slowly releasing new models, gradually filling all market segments. Today we will talk about Nokia 5. In the manufacturer’s lineup, it is located above the smartphone , but everything also applies to budget devices.

Equipment

The smartphone is delivered in a small flat box. Inside there is a charger, a USB cable, a headset and paper documentation. The kit is not bad; an undemanding user will like the fact that after purchasing a phone, there is no need to spend money on a headset.

Appearance

Nokia 5 comes in four colors - black, silver, indigo and copper. Interestingly, the color changes only on the metal back cover, while the front side will always be black. We have a silver smartphone in our review.

Before moving on to describing the appearance, I note that the smartphone feels truly monolithic. Holding the device in your hands, you can’t immediately tell that this is an inexpensive device. In terms of tactile sensations, it is close to expensive smartphones.

The front panel is covered with rounded 2.5D glass. The arrangement of elements is traditional. The audio jack is on the top edge, which not everyone will like. MicroUSB port in the middle of the bottom end.

Navigation is carried out using hardware touch keys. In this case, the home key is combined with a fingerprint scanner. Fingerprints are not always recognized the first time, and the unlocking animation is not smooth.

It’s good that there are two independent trays - the first hides two nanoSIM SIM cards, and the second holds a microSD memory card.

Display

The smartphone is equipped with a 5.2 inch IPS display with HD resolution. In the role protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass is used. There is an oleophobic coating, which is far from the best quality.

Under direct sunlight, the image on the Nokia 5 display fades greatly, but you can make out the information.

Brightness varies from 2.4 to 576 cd/m². Contrast 1 to 720.

The color gamut is wider than the sRGB triangle. At low brightness, colors look cooler than necessary, but at brightness above 30% the color temperature is correct.

Subjectively, the screen quality is good. The picture on it is bright and rich, with deep blacks.

Hardware platform

Nokia 5 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. Once turned on, 650 MB of RAM is available. The amount of internal memory available to the user after the first turn on is only 8 GB.

In most tasks, the smartphone works quite smoothly, but there are often times when the phone starts to slow down a lot. There have been cases when the smartphone literally froze and only a reboot helped.

At the same time, freezes and brakes are not systematic. The rest of the time, Nokia 5 is a very responsive and fast smartphone, but in terms of stable and smooth operation it is inferior and Xiaomi Redmi 4 Pro. The device will not be suitable for gamers, but this does not mean that all games will work poorly. If you prefer puzzles, casual or arcade games, then the smartphone will handle it all without problems.

Nokia 5 runs on its own latest version OS Android 7.1.1. It is one of the first to receive security updates. There are no third-party shells - this is a kind of “Nexus” in front of you. There is a minimum of pre-installed software, which is also good.

The quality of network reception within the city was not satisfactory. There are also no problems finding satellites. During navigation, the location is determined accurately, without losing connection. Volume conversational dynamics sufficient to hear the interlocutor even near a busy road. There are no complaints about the microphone either.

Autonomy

The battery capacity is 3000 mAh and is not removable. With normal use, without games or long-term video viewing, it worked for almost two days, with an active screen time of 5 hours with automatic brightness adjustment. The discharge occurs linearly and predictably down to 1%.

In the PCMark test at 200 cd/m² (56%), it lasted 8 hours 18 minutes, which is a good result.

The included charger operates in 5V/2A mode. Full charging time is less than two hours.

Cameras

The camera characteristics are standard and will surprise few people. The main one is 13 megapixels with f/2.0, dual flash and phase detection autofocus, and the front one is 8 megapixels with f/2.0 and a viewing angle of 84°. Both cameras record video in 1080p.

The camera interface is minimalistic. There are only the most necessary settings and modes. An interesting feature is the ability to display a compass and level in the viewfinder, but there are no manual settings.

The quality of images taken on the Nokia 5 can be called good, for a smartphone of this level. In HDR mode, photos are saved for a long time and often they look completely unnatural. Sometimes the focus does not fall on the desired object the first time, but in general the quality of the images is normal, if you do not photograph in the dark, since then there is too much noise. According to the results of our test tests, Nokia 5 found itself in a difficult position. Although we really liked the workmanship and tactile sensations that this inexpensive Android smartphone provides, the mediocre photo quality and rather meager equipment made it impossible to place of this device in good positions in our respective rankings. However, since Nokia promises that it will provide updates to buyers of this smartphone for approximately two years, it definitely deserves attention from a security point of view.

Nokia 5 test: looks and feel match

Nokia 5 looks good and feels comfortable in the hand. As in the case of the larger one, an aluminum Unibody is used here, which, however, has more rounded edges. Many in our editorial team liked this better than the angular body of the Nokia 6. The 5.2-inch display offers a viewing area sufficient for everyday use - however, if media content is a priority for you, then smartphones with a display diagonal of 5.5 inches or larger may be suitable you're a little better. The so-called 2.5D glass of Nokia 5 at the edges has minimal bending towards the edges of the frame, which looks very stylish and provides a pleasant tactile sensation.

Nokia 5 fits well in the hand

The display has only HD resolution

We were somewhat concerned about the detail of the images displayed by Nokia 5 - after all, the display of this smartphone displays content in HD resolution with its 720x1280 pixels. Anyone who pays attention to this will certainly see shortcomings. The edges of the letters, for example, show slight unevenness. Since the display boasts a very high brightness of 589 cd/m2 and is therefore suitable for use under sunlight, it ultimately scores well in the test results.

The workmanship of the copy we tested, however, turned out to be not ideal: if you run your finger from the left edge to the screen (as is often necessary to do in the case of Android), you can feel a small gap and, accordingly, a slightly uneven transition between surfaces. On the right side, on the contrary, the display is perfectly connected to the body.

The display is very bright and makes a good impression. But the resolution could be higher

Photo quality is only mediocre

In our test laboratory, the Nokia 5's 13-megapixel camera did not perform well. Although lab measurements indicate sharp images, the model we tested had some blurriness in the lower left portion of the photo. This effect is clearly visible even in daylight - while the rest of the photo makes a good impression.

Insufficient lighting increases unwanted blurriness. In this case, the scene being filmed appears blurry and somewhat dark. In addition, in poor lighting, a high level of noise and soft rendering of the picture, almost smoothing out all textures, catches the eye. Optical image stabilization, which typically improves image quality in low light, is mobile phone absent. In this case, video can be shot in Full-HD resolution, but the maximum speed is 30 frames per second.

Photo quality is ok. But the left Bottom part The photo appears blurry. In twilight lighting this effect is enhanced

Performance is ok

Nokia 5 has the same mid-range processor as Nokia 6: Snapdragon 430 with eight cores and maximum clock frequency 1.4 GHz. But we liked the performance of the smaller model more, which is most likely a consequence of the lower display resolution. However, fast scrolling here is not possible without any delays, although it can be said to be “okay”. During the test, we were sometimes annoyed by the lazier ones, when compared with fast smartphones, screen reactions to commands.

To ensure quick and yet secure unlocking of your smartphone, Nokia 5 has an integrated fingerprint scanner. It works, in general, quite quickly, but it could also be a little more efficient.

High-end devices scroll content faster - but overall performance is acceptable

Good battery life, sparse equipment

During our battery testing, which closely examines the length of time battery life with the display turned on in the “mixed” scenario, the Nokia 5 lasted a good 9 hours and 23 minutes. The most durable smartphones can withstand from 12 to almost 14 hours in this mode - but this Nokia model still looks good against this background, because its 3000 mAh battery cannot boast of being overly large in size.

Unfortunately, the smartphone does not support fast charging technology (although theoretically its “system on a chip” is familiar with QuickCharge). The consequence of this is the long charging process, which is 3 hours 15 minutes. With modern devices this should take about 90 minutes. You won't be able to charge Nokia 5 wirelessly either.

Of the total amount of built-in memory, approximately 9 GB are available for efficient use by users to store their data. This is rather small. But through the corresponding slot, the smartphone can accept a Micro-SD memory card on board. Generally speaking, purchasing a memory card for this smartphone is almost mandatory.

We appreciate the fact that the model we tested supports the Dual-SIM function. Otherwise, the smartphone’s equipment doesn’t have much to offer. The LTE module operates at speeds only up to 150 Mbit/s, and the case is not waterproof. Even the LED indicator, which could signal missed notifications, is missing here.

Back cover made of aluminum looks high quality - but it still shows greasy stains

Native Android 7 with promised updates

The bright spot, on the contrary, is the “thin” and almost native operating system Android 7, which is presented without a modified user interface. Since Nokia is collaborating with Google and leaving the system virtually unchanged, the manufacturer can promise regular updates for security systems and even “major” versions, and plans to do this over the next two years.

This is a very valuable feature of a smartphone in terms of security, although it still did not affect the final place of the device in the ranking, since we cannot evaluate the manufacturer’s promises. However, in the eyes of buyers, Nokia 5 should gain a certain advantage over smartphones of the same price category, but do not have such good support - at least if the manufacturer remains true to its ambitious plans.

Alternative: Honor 6X 32GB

For about 14,500 rubles as of July 2017, you can get one, which performed better during our tests. Initially, this smartphone was launched on the market with Android 6, but now it also runs on Android control 7. We certainly expect the Nokia 5 to receive support for longer. But for those who don’t care about this, they can get a good alternative in the Honor 6X.

It is said to be reminiscent of the Lumia line. I didn’t think so, what do you think? The smartphone looks very impressive, especially in indigo (dark blue) color. Although the model is inexpensive, it resembles a flagship, it is made of high-quality materials, a monolithic block, without any plastic strips for communication (they moved to the ends of the device, the solution is excellent and technologically advanced) like competing companies. The device itself lies very comfortably in my hand and does not slip. Note the presence of separate slots for a microSD card and 2 nanoSim cards. This is perhaps a feature and at the same time a plus. It’s surprising that to this day there is no official information on the Internet about the weight of the device.
In general, from the point of view of ergonomics, the smartphone is very good and made a favorable impression. In this regard, the design receives the highest score; the device came out individual and unlike its competitors.

Shell

To be honest, there is nothing in the shell, it is completely empty, without add-ons. But we have Andriod 7.1.1 on board, which is updated regularly. Essentially, we got a Nexus (now a Pixel) from Nokia that has priority system updates, which is definitely great. A feature of the shell for many will be the ability to call up the application menu not with a specially highlighted icon, but with a swipe from bottom to top. There is also a function ala 3D touch, but it works not by the force of pressing the icon, but by duration. Very comfortably! That’s all, actually, we can’t highlight any more functions, with the exception of a fairly fast fingerprint scanner.

Specifications

  • CPU

    Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 MSM8937 8 cores

  • Video processor

Now the most interesting thing is what kind of hardware the middle brother of the newly made Nokia received. So, the “heart” is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 MSM8937 processor, which has 8 cores at 1.2 GHz, while the “soul” is graphics accelerator Adreno 505. This bundle was released in the third quarter of 2015. It was produced for mid-range smartphones, that is, this hardware will not provide you with maximum performance, but for the most standard tasks it will have enough performance, which is very pleasing. We don’t think that the device will be purchased primarily for gaming, but rather for its reliability and brand. It is worth noting that 8 cores will allow you to work completely smoothly in multitasking mode, and given the multi-window functionality supported by the system, this feature will be very useful.

Memory

Today there are no problems with memory. The smartphone has 16 GB of built-in memory, you won’t be able to install many games, and it’s not enough for photos, so we recommend that you immediately buy additional memory, since there is a separate slot for it that supports up to 128 GB of additional built-in memory. Now there will be enough memory in abundance and you will not have the opportunity to complain about its lack. Random access memory the smartphone has 2 GB, here one can already blame Nokia for minimalism, but approximately 700 MB is always available to the user, which is not so little.

Connection

What makes Nokia 5 happy is its connection. The device picks up the network just fine. There are no complaints about the work cellular network, even users on the Internet note that Nokia 5 “catch” even where others fail. This has always distinguished Nokia devices. We also cannot fail to note the presence of an NFC chip, which, paired with a fingerprint scanner, will help you easily pay for purchases from your smartphone using Android Pay. Also, the company did not deprive us of radio. In a word, everything you need works beyond all praise, and we also give the GPS a flattering word!

Description of the Nokia 5 smartphone on Android 7.1

The Finnish company Nokia continues its return to the smartphone market and on February 26 added the Nokia 5 model to its range of mid-budget devices, which will run on Android 7.1. As the manufacturer said at the presentation, this smartphone can be purchased for about $200. But do not forget that the cost may vary depending on the country and taxes that are added upon sale. But these are already financial issues, let's move on to a short review of this “fifth” Nokia model.

Since the company has always been famous for high-quality cameras that were built into mobile devices, let's start with it. Here the engineers installed a 13-megapixel model with a photosensitivity (or aperture) of f/2.0. The photo sensor size of Nokia 5 is 1/3", respectively the pixel size will be 1.12 µm. Not very large values, but for a mobile gadget at an average price this is quite enough to get nice photos. On the front side of the smartphone there is an 8-megapixel camera for photo selfies or regular video calls. Here the quality will be enough for everyone: both good pictures against the background of something, and the image when talking with someone.

The manufacturer also saved some money on the display, which received not FullHD resolution, but regular HD, which is 720x1280 pixels. The size of the screen itself can be called ideal - 5.2 inches. This is no longer a small display, nor is it a “shovel”, which scares many. With this ratio, the pixel density is 282 ppi. At arm's length, the pixels will not be visible. But still, when working with text or reading in a browser, such indicators may interfere a little. Among the nice characteristics, it should be noted that the screen is protected by tempered glass Gorilla Glass 3 and at the same time it is rounded at the edges, which gives a 2.5D convex effect or the picture floating above the smartphone.

Now about the performance part. An eight-core processor called Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 is installed here. It is one of the more energy-efficient chips, which will better save battery power. In synthetic tests in the Antutu benchmark, this processor shows a result of 38,000 points or “parrots”, which is quite excellent.

There will be several colors available for purchase: matte black, dark blue, gold and light gray. In this case, the front panel of all will be black. If you write about the conclusion, it will be like this: Nokia 5 technically occupies an average place on the market, not higher; but if you want a smartphone from a well-known manufacturer, with a good camera, a more or less impressive screen (if the resolution itself is not critical) and not a very inflated price - this model is for you!

Video review of Nokia 5:

Nokia, after a short romance with Microsoft, quite unexpectedly came under the wing of HMD Global, which set itself a grandiose task - to resurrect the once former glory of Nokia. IN new Nokia old specialists are working. For example, the CEO is Arto Nummela, who joined the Nokia team back in 1994. The production of smartphones is carried out at the facilities of Foxconn FIH Mobile, which is a subsidiary of Foxconn, which no one hides. In February 2017, in addition to the remake of the legendary Nokia phone 3310, aimed at an audience nostalgic for the early 2000s, more viable models of smartphones based on Android OS were also presented, namely the simple Nokia 3 and the mid-budget Nokia 5, which we will consider today.

Appearance

HMD Global did not resort to the help of third-party design companies, such as ZTE, but developed the design itself, and, from a subjective point of view, it turned out well. The only difference is that the display frames could be smaller. Still, Nokia 5 has to compete with, which essentially has no side frames.

The smartphone body with slightly rounded edges fits comfortably in the hand and does not slip out, so the likelihood of accidental falls is minimized. The build quality is very high, and the torsional rigidity of the case is simply phenomenal, so it is difficult to bend it even with very significant efforts. This is not a bendable iPhone 6. The only thing you can complain about is the metal lock and volume control keys, which rattle when you lightly tap on the case.

The display is covered with protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass. The back panel, which also covers the side surfaces, is made of aluminum alloy. The upper and lower ends are plastic, but not because the manufacturer spared a few square centimeters of aluminum sheet, but because of the need to ensure reliable communication. If an all-metal lid were used, the housing would become a kind of Faraday cage. Some manufacturers make plastic inserts above the antennas directly on the back of smartphones with a metal cover, thereby dividing the cover into several parts. Sometimes such inserts look good, sometimes they look like a foreign body, but the inserts in Nokia 5 look simple and harmonious.

A block of sensors and front-camera. Below the display there are dedicated touch keys for going back one level and calling up the list open applications. The keys are backlit with the ability to adjust the duration of the glow. In the center of the lower part of the front panel there is a fingerprint sensor, which doubles as the home key.

On the back there is a microphone, the main camera and a dual-tone LED flash.

On the right side there are volume control and lock keys. On the left side surface there are two noticeable trays at once, one of which can accommodate a pair of SIM cards, and the second - one microSD cards. With only 9GB of storage space available to the user, a dedicated memory card tray is a vital feature.

At the top end there is only a standard 3.5 mm headphone/headphone jack, and at the bottom end there is a microphone, speaker and microUSB connector, for which Nokia 5 gets a minus in the piggy bank.

Software

Here the manufacturer followed the same path as Lenovo in the case of the Moto smartphones it revived, and uses an almost bare Android 7.1.1 OS. It’s hard to say whether it’s good or bad, but one thing is for sure - Android in its current form is already a very convenient OS that does not require active work with a file. Of course, third-party shells have certain interesting features, but these are nothing more than “tricks” and not extremely necessary functions.

Display

The smartphone is equipped with a 5.2-inch display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, which is more than enough for a relatively small diagonal. The LCD matrix is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass with a pronounced 2.5D effect, so when installing the protective glass appearance smartphone is noticeably deteriorating. But fortunately, the display glass is very durable, so it is not that easy to damage. The oleophobic coating of the display is of high quality, so fingerprints are not particularly noticeable. It is also noteworthy that the screen supports up to 10 simultaneous clicks, although on such a small diagonal there is no need for this. The maximum brightness of the display backlight is high, and when measured in the center for a white field, an impressive level of 555.05 cd/sq.m was recorded. In our database of measurement results, on this moment, is the best result. Unfortunately, the brightness of the black field is also high - 0.88 cd/sq.m., so the static contrast is not so high - 631:1. In addition, on a black or dark uniform fill of the screen, intersected areas around the perimeter of the display are clearly visible. The color gamut corresponds almost entirely to the standard sRGB color space. The color deviation delta E on the gray scale is in the range of 2.6...9.6, and on primary colors (RGBCMY) - 0.8...8.1, which is an acceptable result for non-professional equipment. The color temperature in medium and light shades is in the range of 7400...7700 K, and in dark ones it increases sharply and overcomes the mark of 10,000 K. However, in dark colors it is extremely difficult to notice this with the naked eye.

Sound

There is only one built-in speaker, which is quite expected in the case of a smartphone costing about $200. The speaker volume is average - when playing a sinusoidal signal with a frequency of 1 kHz at a distance of 1 meter, the level was recorded sound pressure 77.5 dBA, which is often enough, but still, when walking along a noisy avenue, you miss the chance incoming call quite high. I am glad that the sound turned out to be clean, detailed, without pronounced artifacts, with a well-developed high-frequency and mid-range. In general, the speaker is quite suitable for watching movies.

Of course, it is better to use headphones to listen to music. Unfortunately, the signal level at the analog audio output is low, and when playing the test signal when operating into a 32 Ohm load, only 190.8 mV was recorded. Not the worst figure, but compared to the phenomenal record set by Sony Xperia L1, the result of Nokia 5 looks modest.

Performance

The smartphone is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 system-on-chip (MSM8937), made using a 28 nm process technology. This SoC is equipped with 8 Cortex-A53 cores, half of which operate at frequencies up to 1.4 GHz, and the other half at frequencies up to 1.1 GHz. The video subsystem is based on Adreno 505. The amount of RAM LPDDR3 (800 MHz) is 2 GB. The ROM volume is small, only 16 GB, but even less is available to the user - only 9 GB, so the presence of a separate slot for installing a memory card is very useful here.

System performance was measured in synthetic PCMark, 3DMark, Geekbench 4 and AnTuTu v6. The following smartphones were chosen as opponents:
: MediaTek MT6737, 4 cores (4x1.44 GHz), 5.5 inches, 1280x720 pixels;
: Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, 8 cores (8x2 GHz), 5.0 inches, 1920x1080 pixels;
: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, 8 cores (4x1.4 GHz, 4x1.1 GHz), 5.2 inches, 1920x1080 pixels;

Testing was also carried out in cross-platform javascript tests (Mozilla Kraken JavaScript and SunSpider). The results of these tests vary greatly depending on the browser used, so to minimize impact, all reviews will use Google Chrome, as the most common.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with an 8 megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture, which is quite good in the case of front cameras. Moreover, the camera is capable of taking pretty good “selfies”. Of course, at 100% magnification a slight oversharpening is noticeable, but overall everything is at a very decent level.

The main camera is 13 megapixels, with an aperture opening of f/2.0. Unfortunately, it was not possible to find out the model of the sensor used. The camera is equipped with a dual-tone LED flash with fairly high power. At a distance of 1 meter from the smartphone, a light level of 47.1 lux was recorded. Not a record, but one of the best results among competitors.

In the camera settings, everything is simplified as much as possible and aimed towards complete automation. Even the virtual HDR mode icon button appears only when the automation detects a scene with a large difference in brightness in the frame. In manual mode, you can select the exposure metering mode, introduce exposure compensation, select the focus operating mode, as well as preset the white balance. Surprisingly, there is no option to select the sensitivity level, although Nokia 3 has such a function. Fortunately, it supports transferring camera control to third-party applications using the Camera 2 API, as well as shooting in RAW, so the test pattern was shot using Adobe Lightroom in RAW (DNG) format, followed by conversion to JPEG with minimal compression. To assess image quality, a test pattern was shot with sensitivity values of ISO 100...3200 in steps of 1 EV. It is noteworthy that when using third party applications It's possible to shoot with sensitivity up to ISO 9600, but above ISO 3200 you get a mess of noise various types. Below are cropped fragments.

Illumination 50 lux + flash

Video recording

In video recording mode, you can actually select only the frame resolution, and there are essentially no other settings. The video quality is below average, the image is a little blurry, and when shaking, the electronic stabilizer dampens vibrations in a very specific way, which is why a “jelly” effect appears. In general, you can make a video, but definitely not for viewing on a big screen.

Autonomous operation

The smartphone uses a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 2900 mAh. When tested using our method, the smartphone lasted 855 minutes in reading mode, 835 minutes in FullHD video viewing mode, and 316 minutes in game mode with maximum backlight brightness. The test methodology can be found in the review. Charger, included in the package, looks the same as the Nokia 3, the voltage is also the same - 5 Volts, but the charging current is twice as high - 2 A versus 1 A. The duration of a full charge is 145 minutes, and 85% level is achieved in 85 minutes.

Conclusion

Evaluating the design of a device is a thankless task in principle, but from a subjective point of view, it was a success. The smartphone does not seem like just another iPhone clone; it has its own individuality (as far as this is possible in the case of a smartphone), but there are no pretentious elements. In general, the body is made in a typical Scandinavian style. The quality of materials and workmanship is pleasantly pleasing, and the incredible torsional rigidity of the case is at least impressive. Although there is still something to complain about - the rattling physical keys are like a fly in the ointment. Also among the significant shortcomings, it is worth noting the microUSB connector, which is not a particularly powerful system-on-chip, although if games are not included in the list of daily tasks, then it will be enough for most typical tasks. The photo quality of the main camera is mediocre, but the front camera, on the contrary, showed itself to be very worthy.

Minuses:
— rattling of mechanical keys when lightly tapped;
— microUSB connector;
— uneven display illumination, which is especially noticeable in dark tones;
- small amount of ROM (and a very tiny amount available to the user);
— low sound level on the analog audio output;
— quality of photographs of the main camera;
— low video quality and a jelly effect when shaking the smartphone during video recording.
Pros:
interesting design(subjectively);
— backlighting of dedicated touch keys;
— overall high-quality assembly;
— extremely high torsional rigidity of the body;
— separate trays for installing SIM cards and memory cards;
— support for 5 GHz WiFi band;
— high-quality system speaker;
— good front camera;
- relatively powerful LED flash;
— NFC module.
