Radar detectors are a new generation of specialized equipment for the preventive detection of radars and traffic police video cameras on domestic roads. According to the principle of operation, it differs from traditional radar detectors and is safe for participants traffic and is not prohibited by law in the Russian Federation.

However, radar detectors require proper installation, configuration and constant updating of databases. Why is this necessary, how is it produced and what results does it give?

Radar detector databases

Unlike anti-radars, which create frequency interference in front of a moving car, confusing traffic police equipment and making it impossible to detect a violation of the speed limit, detector radars do not emit anything, but constantly receive surrounding frequency signals and are able to isolate the signals of working police systems from the electronic “noise.” speed control.

To identify radars and video recording cameras, signature technology is used - the principle of determining the individual signal of each police device on the road (it is called a unique “signature”). Radar detector:

receives the emitted signal;
the signature module processes its parameters (amplitude, frequency and periodicity of pulses, pauses between pulses);
checks the parameters with known signatures of police equipment loaded into the database;
identifies the signal as a traffic police radar signal or as extraneous noise;
warns the driver to slow down.

That is, radar detectors are able to distinguish frequency pulses from traffic police control equipment and distinguish it from other frequency signals - emissions from door opening systems, translators mobile operators, ABS and GPS systems of cars, etc. This is the main advantage and advantage of signature radars.

How does the device distinguish the desired microwave signals from extraneous ones? For this purpose, the signature module contains a built-in database of all known traffic police radar signals. And in order to minimize errors and false alarms of the device, the radar database is supplemented with a database of known extraneous signals (“noise”), and the device is checked against both one and the other database, reducing the probability of error to a minimum.

However, equipment for traffic police is being improved, new radar models with more complex frequency radiation are constantly being released (often with combined microwave, laser and GPS signals). This means that the database of radar detectors must be constantly updated (upload new firmware).

How are radar detector databases updated?

Typically, updates to radar detectors are offered by equipment developers on official websites. The update is new version Firmware is a program that fully controls all hardware functions and system options. When new options and data appear, the firmware:

downloaded from the developer’s website;
opens and installs on a PC to which the radar is connected via USB;
loaded into the radar memory.

Procedure for updating SHO-ME radar databases

SHO-ME signature radar detectors are high-tech universal radar equipment made in South Korea. Radars have easy installation and configuration are trouble-free, and the developer quite often updates the database on its official website.

The firmware update process is almost identical to SHO-ME radar updates:

The radar is connected to a PC.
The archive is downloaded from the developer's website.

In addition, before downloading updates, you can change the parameters of the radar menu (“Settings menu” - setting parameters - “Save” - set a point on the Menu item - “Download” - exit the program). With the new settings loaded, you can now download the installer to your device.

Thus, updating the databases on the radar detector will allow your device to constantly expand the list of signatures of traffic police control devices loaded into it and reduce the number of errors and false positives.

Updating databases is a simple process that is performed semi-automatically after you download the archive with the installer new firmware on PC. The main thing is to be careful and follow the installation instructions exactly.

The RD database must be updated if the following signs of unstable operation occur:

Poor protection against interference (increase in false alarms).
Malfunctions during continuous long-term use.
Does not correspond to the declared signal reception range.

A long time ago I promised to write about the firmware of my radar detector, which I bought for my vacation. I even took screenshots, but somehow there was no time for it. I'll try to do it now. So, on the eve of the vacation, I bought it at MVideo (the cheapest one was there) Supra iG55SVT:

If there are no problems with the first moment, then with the second there is a nuance that many miss and instead of an assistant, the radar detector turns into an enemy whining angrily at everything and everyone along the way.
So let's do everything right:
1) go to the manufacturer’s website Supra to section Auto\Radar Detectors with GPS, we are looking for EXACTLY our model iG55SVT, and not i55GVST or some other i55XYZ. The firmware between such modifications is not compatible and you will get a brick. Go to the “Files for downloading” section and download the following files to your computer: ig55.rar- firmware, UpdateTool_Converter.rar- software for assembling the database and downloading updates to the radar detector; - KSS Avtodoriya database. Let's look at the "download files" for the iG68SVT and download its firmware - iG67-68-77VST.rar(the file may be called differently). To the question why we need someone else's firmware, I will give a simple answer: we need a sound file from it. PS: file names change periodically.

2) Unpack UpdateTool_Converter.rar and install software for building databases and updating software. After installation in Windows menu we get new folder Supra, and it has 2 programs: DB_Navitel- with its help we will collect the radar database in the form we need without unnecessary debris and UpdateTool4GPS- database and firmware update program:
3) Unpack and stack the files from the archives: ig55.rar- firmware, Navitel_20XX-XX-XX_Autodoria.txt- KSS Avtodoria database, from iG67-68-77VST.rar from the Voices folder we take the file GPS_FemaleFull_Voice_150807_00.voh - this is a complete voiceover of all warnings in a female voice (by default, in our 55th, a man drones on the main points and that’s all).
4) In order to flash the current data, we are missing one file - this is a file with a radar database. You can also download it from the “files for download” section from the Supra offsite, but that’s not a problem, there is a database with a bunch of data, and we don’t always need it, and more often than not it’s just an enemy, because it contains a huge amount of garbage and unnecessary data, from -for which the radar detector will blow our minds. So we go to the site SpeedCamOnline. Here we select the following data only:
- Cards - strelki
- Filter - Camera type uncheck all the boxes except: stationary radar, video block, low-power (we don’t need everything else, since dummies are dummies, we’ve already downloaded the autodoria, and the radar detector already catches the rest)
- Export - Speedcam for Navitel click "Only filtered" and we get the other half we need to assemble the radar base, without unnecessary garbage:
5) We assemble the database for loading into the radar detector - launch DB_Navitel, indicate the path to the downloaded files with data about Avtodoriya and radars and press the button " Conversion", at the output we get the base for the firmware: Exit the program.
6) Now let's launch UpdateTool4GPS, indicate the paths to the firmware, voice and radar database:

We connect the cable from the radar detector kit to the computer, after detecting the device, we customize the parameters of the City1/City2/Highway/Smart modes. Then we set the radar detection parameters:
- ranges (check the boxes): X, K, Ka (I have the first 2))
- Arrow levels - On

- GPS alerts: since our database is optimized from garbage - select all

Turn on the device with the MUTE button pressed: the radar detector display shows the radar database version first, and the firmware version second. The database and firmware version is displayed in the YYYYMMDD format. (for example 20150828)

This procedure must be performed in the vehicle with power connected.

Note!

If you have the 2015 firmware installed (2-point), then you need to install the camera base with the 2015 firmware (“2-point base”). If you have the 2014 firmware installed (1 - point), then you need to install the camera database with the 2014 firmware ("1 - point"). To update the camera database, go to the section "3. Updating the camera database".

You can also update the firmware to 2015 (2-point) or return it back to 2014 (1-point), for this you need to go to the section

Now there is no need to install drivers or update programs in EXE format.

Driver installation

The driver is installed on your computer to automatically detect the radar detector. Download and run the appropriate driver on your computer.

The driver must be installed on the computer before connecting the radar detector to the computer via a USB cable.

If the driver is not installed on the computer, then when you try to load the database, the message “Fail COM Port” or “Fail COM Port Connect” will appear. Install the driver again. Be sure to check if you have selected the correct driver file (32 or 64 bit).

A radar detector is a device designed to suppress certain radiation. When a signal of a certain frequency is detected, the device turns on a stronger signal with distorted modulation of the same frequency. Since the device is a powerful source of radio signals and is capable of disrupting the operation of many radio devices, its use is contrary to the laws of almost all countries and entails punishment in the form of a fine, criminal liability or any other measures depending on the laws of the country.

That is why only radar detectors are available for sale, which many users, out of habit, call radar detectors. Radar detectors are passive devices that operate as signal detectors for certain ranges to which they are tuned. The use of these devices is not prohibited by law in most countries.

Depends on two factors. The first factor, undoubtedly, is its internal electronic filling, which includes a processor, receivers with antennas and other structural elements. Second no less important factor is the software and hardware part, or firmware of the radar detector, which is responsible for the ability to determine modern types of radars and sensitivity to a particular radiation. After all, the radiation of each radar model has its own characteristics, and accordingly, each case requires its own signal processing algorithm. The availability of various additional functions also depends on the firmware capabilities of the radar detector. The same model with different firmware may differ significantly in operation and capabilities. Manufacturers are constantly releasing new firmware versions for their detector models. It may be necessary to reflash the radar detector when a new type of radar appears, if the manufacturer releases a new software version for your model.

You can find out the firmware version in different ways, depending on the detector model. For example, on the Whistler Pro78 and XTR-695 models, you need to keep the City button pressed. The firmware version number will be displayed on the screen. For models SHO-ME 685, Sho-Me 720, Sho-Me 785, to do this, you need to open the detector cover and look at the inscription on the main chip.

Unfortunately, in most cases, it is difficult to reflash a radar detector at home, since this procedure requires special interface devices. However, some craftsmen still manage to make the necessary devices and flash a radar detector, but this is rather an exception to the rule. Usually, firmware changes are performed by the manufacturer itself at the factory. To do this, you need to send your detector to the manufacturer through the dealer service network. Moreover, without taking into account the shipping time, in order to flash the radar detector, it takes 1 - 2 days, after which the detector is returned to the user.

Updating the radar database via OTG downloader

This radar detector allows you to download a new camera database or firmware using the included USB bootloader directly in the car. To do this you will need a USB flash drive.

Write a camera database file or a firmware file with a voice file onto it. Note! Files must be written in the format SMDBxxxx.bin, SMFWxxxx.bin and SMSDxxxx.bin respectively, where xxxx is the file version.
After this, turn on the device
Turn off the power, then disconnect the flash drive.
Firmware (software) update
- Before starting the update process, be sure to disable your antivirus. The files downloaded from our website do not contain viruses; the antivirus may block the unpacking of the update files, as a result of which the update process will not complete correctly.
- Connect the radar detector to your computer only using the USB cable included with the device. Using a different USB cable may damage the device.
- Run the software update program. Follow the following instructions for your radar detector.
In June 2017, we updated the firmware for this device, which uses a new format for the radar and camera database. Before updating, you need to check the firmware version of your device in the radar detector menu (turn on the device with the MUTE button pressed? The version of the radar database is displayed, and then the firmware). The firmware version should be indicated - 2017xxxx. If the firmware does not match the specified one, you need to update the firmware.

- Connect the radar detector to your computer
- Download the firmware, unzip it and run the updater
- The driver for the device is installed automatically after running the update program (if the driver is not installed for some reason, it can be downloaded separately from the links - for 32-bit systems, for 64-bit systems)
- In the SmartDownloader program you can set the necessary settings
- Click the "Download" button, wait until the update finishes

- After this, turn on the device
- The display will show SEARCH - search for files. If a camera database file is found, a flashing message will appear - DB (Database). Press any button and the download will begin. The display shows START. Wait until it loads 100%. The COMPLETE message will confirm the loading of the new camera database. If you do not press any button, PASS will appear on the display. The firmware and voice file are updated in the same way (FW or SOUND flashes on the display)
- Turn off the power, then disconnect the flash drive

Today, almost every third motorist has a radar detector, or, in common parlance, a radar detector (which in the understanding of most users is the same thing). Of course, you are not very happy with the operation of your device, since it sometimes “glitches”, freezes, and makes a lot of noise. A radar detector is a rather complex radio receiver equipped with a processor and software detection. Its performance directly depends on the relevance of the firmware of this device. Like DVRs, radar detectors come with basic, factory firmware. Updating the firmware on your own often leads to a breakdown of the device, since the update instructions do not always take into account small nuances, and users do not always follow the manual thoroughly.
