Article Description

Hello everyone! This topic will be useful for those who want to block the bootloader. It’s no secret (and a discovery for many) that Android Pay It works with an NFC module, on stable firmware, without root and with a locked bootloader. You can check the status of the bootloader in the “For Developers” settings, it looks like this: A small digression Unfortunately, most Mi phones in the so-called “official” Russian stores come with an unlocked bootloader. Why is that? No one can give a specific answer. I can tell you from my own experience, I live in China and went to 2 official Xiaomi stores, checked the bootloader on the phones on display (Mi Mix 1/2, Mi 6, Mi Max2 and some from Note, I don’t remember exactly). And guess what? It's blocked on everyone! And to my question in what condition does it leave the factory, after calling hotline they said it was blocked. And it is obvious that in order to unlock it you need to manipulate the phone. And another small fact, my friend and I ordered phones through an online platform for friends, 3 Mi 6s and one Note 4x, and later I ordered a Mi Mix, and on all phones the bootloader was locked, I had to unlock it to install the global))) So, if you need to lock your bootloader, you have two options. One with data loss and the other without data loss (But this is not certain). I’ll tell you first about the one without data loss) 1. Lock the bootloader without data loss (on some models the data is erased, it’s not clear what it depends on) Before you start, you need to know about some points. First: this doesn't work on all phones. But for the most part latest phones works. And judging by the comments on the forum it works for a lot of people. Secondly: it works correctly on official firmware if they have not been modified system files(root access, recovery patch, TWRP, etc.) Otherwise, the command will not work or you will get a bootloop (perpetual download). Thirdly: On almost all unofficial firmware the command does not work, you will get a bootloop (perpetual download). Attention: You do everything At your own peril and risk, backup is required. Let's begin! 1. Check whether the adb and fastboot drivers are installed on the PC. Usually they are located on the “C” drive in the “adb” folder. If not installed, type into Google or Yandex “how to install adb and fastboot” and follow the instructions.2. We put the phone into fastboot mode (in the off state, hold down the power and volume down buttons at the same time until you see a hare and the word fastboot) and connect it to the computer.3. We go to the folder with installed adb and fastboot (usually in the adb folder on drive C), hold down Shift and right-click on an empty space in the folder and select “Open command window” or if you have Power Shell, respectively, “Open via Power Shell”4 . We begin to register: fastboot devicesAfterwards it should give out the phone ID5. Next, we check the status of the bootloader with the command: fastboot oem device-info If the bootloader is unlocked, the answer will be: 6. Next we write the command to lock: fastboot oem lock And if everything is fine, we get OKAY7. We check the status of the bootloader again with the command: fastboot oem device-info If everything went correctly it will be false on all counts: Reboot into the system with the command: fastboot reboot That's it, ready! 2. We block the bootloader with data loss. This method erases all data from the phone since this is a regular flashing with the choice of the bootloader blocking function, so before performing it, check that everything is synchronized (contacts, calendar, notes, etc.; done application backup and download it to your computer; photos, music, important documents on your computer).1. Download and install the Mi Flash2 program. Download your firmware from the official website (the firmware must be for fastboot) and throw it in new folder to drive "C" (the folder name should not have Russian letters and symbols)3. Enter the phone into fastboot mode (it says how at the top) and connect the phone to the computer.4. Open the program, press select or open (depending on the version of the program) and select the folder in which the firmware files are located, this is very important, because as I remember the firmware is in a folder that is in another folder.5. Press refresh, information about the phone6 should be displayed. The most important step that cannot be missed, otherwise you did everything in vain;) select “clean all and lock” at the bottom of the program7. Press flash and wait for the phone to boot. That's all. Next you will have the first setup and restoration from backups. That's all, good luck everyone! Leave your questions in the comments!

The bootloader (Hboot) is a program that controls the kernel operating system your device so that it boots normally. Moreover, this applies not only to Android, but also to other devices with an OS, such as a PC, laptop, and even an old one. push-button telephone. In addition, it is the bootloader that gives permission to install any programs and firmware. For this reason, users are interested in factory unlocking the bootloader on an Android phone.

Hboot is activated when the device is turned on, and is an analogue of Bios in a computer. It prepares all the data for the kernel, loads it into memory, after which the system starts directly. If its integrity is damaged or something interferes, thanks to the bootloader you can get into recovery mode to clear the data, or perform a reset to factory settings. To do this, before turning on the device, hold down the power and volume down keys and do not release them until booting (in some cases, the combination of buttons may differ).

Why is the bootloader locked?

Manufacturers block for two reasons:

1. Oblige the owner to use the operating system that was developed for his device.

2. Security. Many smartphones and tablets are sold online or in retail stores. In both cases, the seller or intermediary may, at its discretion, add advertising or malicious software that should not exist. For the same reason, Xiaomi began to block the bootloader of devices released after 2016, due to numerous complaints about the presence of viruses in their firmware (which were not initially present).

Benefits of an unlocked bootloader

An unlocked bootloader opens up exactly the same possibilities for the user as on a PC, namely:

  1. Flash any operating system (available for your device).
  2. Installation of individual modules, OS kernels, applications, patches.
  3. Freely migrate between standard firmwares, especially if they are based on different versions Android.
  4. Easily create backup copies of the current OS and/or applications, as well as restore them without using a PC.
  5. Use Dual-Boot and install two or more operating systems, as in internal memory, and to an external SD card.
  6. Wider recovery options in case of unsuccessful firmware.

And this is not the entire list of possibilities after factory unlocking Android.

How to unblock

Each device has its own version of the bootloader, which means the unlocking method will differ depending on the model and manufacturer. When submitting an application, the block can be removed by the company itself (especially if you are an Android developer), but most often, this happens by hacking previously found vulnerabilities in the system.

Risks and consequences

Unauthorized unlocking of the bootloader deprives you warranty service. In addition, your device becomes less secure and vulnerable to hacker attacks. Open bootloader allows you to bypass set passwords, gain access to personal information or erase everything and install different firmware.

Conclusion

There is no need to worry too much about problems with the bootloader, especially when it comes to personal information. Found or stolen devices most often have their data erased, and rarely will anyone restore anything. An open bootloader is more needed by advanced users who know what to do with it, regularly flash something and experiment.

On most devices this process is simple, but with some Chinese brands(or even certain models of the line) difficulties may arise.

In particular, to install the software, you must first unlock the bootloader, the methods of which will be described in this material.

Why do you need a bootloader?

A downloader is a special application (process) that allows you to download and install various software to a smartphone. It is present in any device, but can be locked or unlocked.

Most often, users have problems with unofficial software - its installation is blocked on the bootloader, while official applications and programs from the developer are installed freely.

This phenomenon poses the greatest problem when installing new firmware.

The fact is that official firmware, which largely changes appearance either the smartphone menu language is very limited (and for some models they are absent altogether), or they are just as inconvenient, do not expand functionality and do not meet other requirements.

In fact, the most preferred are unofficial firmware developed by enthusiasts, which can significantly improve the performance of the device.

In what cases might the user need to reflash the device?

  • When purchasing non-Russian smartphones directly in China;
  • If you want to expand the functionality of the device;
  • If the proprietary shell of the original interface is inconvenient/unusual.

All these problems can only be eliminated by installing new firmware, and the official versions do not solve the problems.

Therefore, you have to download unofficial ones, which the locked bootloader does not allow you to install - when you try to start the installation, a window appears informing you that the process is impossible.

The essence of the problem

This brand blocks the bootloader on all models released after November 2015.

Thus, the user cannot receive on these smartphones the following advantages:

Once you have downloaded any type of unofficial software and transferred it to your device, you can try to run its installation.

If the bootloader is unlocked and functioning normally, then the Recovery process will start, but if the bootloader is locked, then, depending on the model of your phone, nothing may happen at all, a reboot may occur, or a notification will appear stating that this type of operation cannot be performed.

Is there a block?

How to find out if your specific device is blocked? All smartphones released in the winter of 2015 and later have a locked bootloader, but exceptions are possible, as well as a situation where the user does not know the release date of his device.

In this case, it is better to first check whether you need to unlock the bootloader, or whether it is already functioning normally.

There are two ways to do this– using the resources of the smartphone itself or using a computer ( various methods for different operating systems). The verification algorithms are described below.

Via smartphone

This method is the simplest and most accessible, but not always accurate. However, you can check for blocking in this way at any time and anywhere, since this only requires the smartphone itself to be checked.

To perform the check, follow the algorithm, below:

  • Go to the settings of your smartphone or tablet;
  • Scroll the entire list of settings to the very bottom, to the last item About device;
  • Go to the About device section;
  • Find the Core line and quickly click on it several times (up to 10 times, usually);
  • A new mode will open, similar to the one that appears after activating root rights;

  • A new menu will open in which you need to find the line Software version;
  • Go to the item and in the new list find the line FastBoot Lock State;
  • It is under this line that the status of your bootloader is indicated(the designation unlock indicates that it is unlocked, lock, respectively, indicates that it is blocked).

You cannot change this indicator in this section in any way. Therefore, just close all menus, exit to standard operating mode and reboot the device. After that, proceed directly to the unlocking process.

The method works great on models and some others, so it is possible that it will work on your device.

However, in some cases you cannot use it, because you cannot get extended user rights - and no matter how much you click on the Kernel item, nothing will happen and an additional menu will not open.

If this happens, then you should use a computer to check for blocking.

Via computer

If checking for a lock via a smartphone fails, then you need to check it through a computer after connecting the smartphone to it.

The method is universal, as it works on any smartphone, but it is more complex, as it requires a computer and a USB cable at hand.

In addition, different scanning algorithms are available for different operating systems.

Windows

The most popular OS and the method of using it to view locks is quite simple.

To view the parameters, proceed according to the algorithm:

  • Turn off your smartphone;
  • Turn on your PC;
  • Prepare the USB cable;
  • Download your smartphone in FastBoot format;
  • Press and hold the volume down keys ( bottom part volume keys) and power on/off key;
  • Connect the gadget to the PC using a USB cable;
  • Press and hold your computer keyboard for a while Win buttons+ R ;
  • The Run window will open - in the print area, enter the cmd combination to activate it;

  • Click Enter on the keyboard or OK in the Run field;
  • The command line is activated, in which you need to enter the abd command;

  • Press Enter on your keyboard;
  • Now you can find out direct information about the bootloader - to do this, type in command linefastboot oem device-info;

  • Press Enter;
  • A new entry will appear on the PC display– Device unlocked and designation – if true, then the device is unlocked, if false, then it is blocked.

Now you can close all windows. Basic data about the device has been received. And if it is blocked, then you can proceed to unlocking.

Linux

A different verification algorithm is given for users.

To check the blocking indicator on it, please do the following:

  • In the command terminal, type abd to activate the command line;

  • Next, enter the script sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot;
  • Activate fastboot mode on your own smartphone by holding down the volume down and power buttons simultaneously for a few seconds;
  • Enter the script sudo fastboot devices on your computer;
  • After pressing the Enter button, a number will appear on the device screen - this is the international identification number of your device;
  • Now type the script sudo fastboot oem device-info and press Enter;
  • The screen will display the status of your bootloader on your smartphone (lock or unlock, respectively);
  • Now you can close all windows and disconnect the connected phone.

The method is suitable not only for Linux, but also for operating systems based on it - , Debian, etc. even any unlocking will proceed in the standard way. The only problem that may arise is when a notification appears waiting for device at any stage of working with the command line - you can eliminate it by running all commands as an administrator.

There is no way to check the bootloader lock on Android using a MacOS computer.

Unlock

Now proceed to the unlocking process itself.

It is quite complex and unique, and it begins with obtaining official permission from the manufacturer.

Getting permission

To obtain permission proceed like this:

  • If you do not have such an account, you must create one on the official website of the brand for further unlocking - without him it's impossible;
  • A new form will open in which you need to fill out English language all fields in order– name, country, phone number, reason for unlocking (for some users this form does not open at all and they immediately go to the download page for the corresponding unlocking software);

  • Check the box for consent to the processing of your personal data and click on the blue-green button in the lower left corner;
  • A code will be sent to the specified phone number, which will need to be entered into the only input field on the page that opens;

  • Click the Next button;
  • A notification will appear on the screen indicating that the application has been accepted for consideration.

Check the application status in your account. Although in the vast majority of cases a notification of its approval is sent to the specified phone number, in some cases this may not happen.

Important! Since this method is completely official, no problems should arise. However, it is still recommended to reinstall the device drivers after receiving it, as some difficulties may still arise.

Actually unlocking

Now that permission has been received, you can directly unlock the device.

To do this, do the following:

  • Check what firmware is installed on your device - unlocking can only be done if China Developer Version or Global Developer Version is installed;
  • Download the firmware itself, the Mi Flash unlock program, to which you will receive a link after receiving permission to unlock;
  • Now place the firmware software in the phone's built-in memory and install the unlock software on the computer;
  • Turn off your mobile device and boot it again in fastboot mode in the manner already described above;
  • Connect the gadget operating in this mode to the computer;
  • Run the program Mi Flash Unlock;
  • Agree to the Terms of Use and Disclaimer by checking the appropriate checkbox and click Next ;

  • Enter personal information– your device ID and password;

  • Click Login ;
  • Wait a little - during this time the device will see and identify your smartphone;
  • The Unblock button will become active - click on it;

This is done by real people who evaluate the activity on your account and may or may not give permission.

If permission is not received, no notification is received; users usually receive approval within one month after submitting the application.

    An SMS with a code will be sent to the entered phone number, which must be entered on the next page, and then click on the “Next” button.

    Now you need to be patient and wait for permission to unlock the bootloader. Typically the waiting time ranges from 12 hours to 15 days.

    It is not necessary to install the firmware for developers; unlocking the bootloader is also possible on the stable version of the firmware.

    After receiving permission (and it is best to do this step in advance), you need to link your phone to the Mi account for which permission to unlock was requested/received, and perform any actions with this account. For example, do backup copy data to the cloud or find your phone on the website.

    Create a folder named “Android” in the root of the C:\ drive.

    Disable driver authentication on PC.
    Windows 7
    When you turn on the computer, after BIOS boot, you must press the F8 key. In the menu that appears " Additional options Download" select "Disable mandatory driver signature". This method may not work the first time, so you should repeat the action or open a command prompt as an administrator and enter two commands:

    To open this section, you need to go to “Settings” → “About phone” and click on “MIUI version” several times.

    Add your MI account to the “Mi Unlock Status” menu.
    To do this, go to the “For Developers” menu and click on the “Add” button account and device."
    If there is no “Mi Unlock Status” item, you need to update the firmware to latest version according to this instructions. If you already have the latest version installed, you will need to install the developer firmware.
    If error 10008 occurs, you need to install any VPN client from Google Play(eg PlexVPN), connect to a China server and then try again.
    If error 86006 occurs, the instructions will help you solve it.

    Launch Mi Unlock Tool and when starting the program, agree to the terms by clicking on the “Agree” button. Then enter your Mi account login and password and click the “Sign In” button.

    Connect the phone to the computer via a USB cable and change the connection type from “Charge only” to “File transfer (MTP)”.
    It is recommended to use the original or cable good quality, and USB port 2.0, located on motherboard(for PC).

    Open a command prompt and go to the created folder Android team“cd c:\Android\” (commands are written without quotes).

    Make sure that the computer finds the device via ADB.
    To do this, you need to enter “adb devices” into the command line. When a request appears on the phone for permission to debug via ADB on this computer You must click “Ok” and select “Always allow from this computer.” If the device is visible, the text “List of devices attached” and a list of all devices (for example, xxxxxxx device) will be displayed. If instead of “device” it says “offline” or the list is empty, then you need to update ADB, check the drivers/cord, change the USB port/computer.

    Reboot your smartphone into Fastboot mode.
    To do this, you need to enter “adb reboot bootloader” in the command line or turn it off, then turn it on while holding down the Volume Down key. A hare wearing a hat with earflaps should appear on the screen.

    Make sure that the computer finds the device in Fastboot mode.
    To do this, enter the command “fastboot devices”. If the response is “xxxxxxx fastboot”, then the phone is connected correctly. If “waiting for device” or nothing at all is displayed, you need to check the status of the USB connection or reinstall the drivers.

    If the phone is displayed correctly in bootloader mode, in the Mi Flash Unlock program, click on the “Unlock” button. The process of unlocking the bootloader will begin.

    If everything is done correctly, the green text “Unlocking Successful” will appear on the screen, after which you can press the “Restart the phone” button or hold down the Power key for about 10 seconds to exit bootloader mode.
    If a 50% error occurs, you need to follow the steps described in step 8, wait a few days (without reinstalling the firmware) and try again.
    If the account on the device in step 15 was added less than three days ago, then the program will display the message “Binding time is too short, Less than 72 hours” or “After XX hours of trying to unlock the device.” In this case, you need to wait 72 hours and try to unlock the bootloader again. In this case, you cannot log out of your account or update the firmware, otherwise the counter will be reset.

    Why unlock the bootloader?

    Custom and localized firmware

    The first and main advantage is the ability to install custom(unofficial) and localized(official, but with modifications specifically for your region) MIUI firmware. Some Xiaomi models accept third-party software, but in most cases, a locked Bootloader will not allow this. Now, in turn, let’s look at what custom firmware provides:

    • Richer functionality and advanced options that allow you to completely control the entire operation of your smartphone;
    • Installed root rights. Very often, unofficial firmware already has a “Superuser” mode.
    • Advanced and sensitive GPS navigator. The location is determined several times faster than on the standard version.
    • A highly optimized operating system kernel that either improves phone performance or increases battery life.

    Modified Recovery (TWRP)

    By unlocking the bootloader, you can easily perform CWM recovery, which is necessary not only to obtain root rights, but also for other important operations on your smartphone. Let's take a closer look:

    • Gives access to install new firmware;
    • Allows you to carry out easily and quickly, saving and leaving absolutely all data intact;
    • Many small new options, changes and improvements to existing functions;
    • Allow installation of batch zip archives;
    • Improved touch interface.

    Root rights

    First we need to download special program Mi Flash Unlock(go to your model thread on the w3bsit3-dns.com forum, download from the link in the topic header, if you haven’t found it, write in the comments, we’ll send you the link). To avoid getting a virus on your device, it is best to download the application from the official Xiaomi website. You can choose the version of the utility yourself, but, of course, the most recent update will be of the highest quality and most effective (you can download a localized version of the program on w3bsit3-dns.com, that is, in Russian).

    It is advisable to put the folder with the program in the root of drive C, example: C:\MiFlashUnlock.

    Now open the Mi Flash program on behalf of administrator, we see White screen with text in Chinese (if the localized version is like mine, then in Russian), where the disclaimer rules are indicated. We agree and click on the appropriate button.

    We are presented with a new window that requires you to log into your Mi account. Enter the password and ID, as they did in other situations. That is, there is nothing new, unusual or complex yet. We carefully check the specified data and keyboard layout, since it is at this stage that many users have problems with the appearance of such a notification: “You entered your password and/or login incorrectly.” Click “Login”.

    Then we return to the smartphone itself. Turn it off and put it in fastboot mode, simultaneously holding down the power and volume down keys. Using a USB cable, connect the phone to the computer.

    The final final stage: the application begins to detect the smartphone and perform a lot of small necessary operations without our intervention. We wait a few minutes ( in my case 25 seconds), and if everything was done correctly, we receive a notification about successful unlocking - three green dots. Ready!

    Bootloader unlock error: try again in 72 hours

    ATTENTION! In 99% of cases, you will not be able to unlock your smartphone, since you need to go through additional verification.

    If you receive a message like: " Binding time is too short, Less than 72 hours" or " After 360 hours of trying to unlock the device", please be aware that this is an additional verification of your account! That is, you must wait 3 days before repeating the procedure again. There is no way to bypass the timer, just be patient, I went through it and so will you!

    Important! At the time of writing, Xiaomi decided to increase additional verification for such models as: Mi5X, Redmi Note 5A, Redmi 5A Redmi 5/5plus, Mi Max. They received unrealistic 360 hour timer.

    After you waited 72/360 hours, repeated the above procedure - did you get 3 green dots? Great! The bootloader is unlocked. Now proceed to installing extended recovery, that is, TWRP, more on this in a separate article, in the category "Firmware".

    Unblocking without submitting an application (unofficial method)

    The official method is the above option, but if for some reason you cannot wait until the application is reviewed and approved, or you need to unlock several devices at once, you should resort to little tricks. The chance of successfully completing this operation is 50 to 50%+ Possible failures and incorrect operation of the operating system. Still want to take a risk? Then let's get started.

    1. Go to “Settings”, go to the very bottom and click “About phone”. Now click on the MIUI version section several times. As you already understood, this is necessary in order to enable developer mode. If you already have it active, skip this point.
    2. Now we return again to the root menu of “Settings” - “Advanced”, “For Developers”.
    3. We see the item “Mi Unlock Status”. Opens new inset, where we click “Add an account or device.”
    4. Next, download a utility called “Mi Unlock”, open it and unlock Bootloader with one click. If everything went well, we see in the status that the bootloader is unlocked.

    Errors and problems that may arise during the process

    Most often, problems arise from the server itself; in most cases, it is not the user's fault. But, nevertheless, you need to know how to deal with them. We offer for your acquaintance an approximate list of violations and methods for eliminating them:

    • The most common complaint is stop removing protection by 50%. It gets exactly halfway and freezes. Unfortunately, these are site glitches; there is nothing you can do here manually. All that remains is to try again periodically. Everything should be successful after about 2-3 times.
    • Is not comingSMSto the specified number before sending the application. The fact is that all security codes are officially sent from China and periodically expire for Russian numbers. You need to either enable a VPN with a Chinese location, or try using a different phone number.
    • Green button is not active. Yes, this is a common problem during the application process. This can be resolved either by simply restarting the browser or by allowing the browser to display pop-up windows. Sometimes disabling your ad blocker helps.
    • Can't log in to yourMi-account. This is what we talked about above, and simply inattention is to blame. Check which keyboard language is enabled, whether you entered the password correctly, and do not confuse your account ID number with your phone number.

    Received a refusal or the wait has been prolonged: what to do?

    The only way out after receiving a refusal is to try again a month later. Exactly a month, not earlier, since this period is officially set by the company. The normal processing time is up to a month; within 30 days you just need to wait. If after a month there is no response, you should write to Xiaomi support or their official forum.

    Try not to make claims, do not use foul language, do not swear, because this only increases the risk of refusal or complete ignoring. Kindly ask why the review took so long and ask if any problems arose.

    You can still apply again, but here it is advisable to use a different account. And to increase the likelihood of a positive response, you should earn Mi-credits and be very active on the Chinese/English Xiaomi forums.

    Is a SIM card required?

    No, unlocking can be done without it, it doesn’t matter.

    As you can see, if you try, you can quickly and comfortably unlock the bootloader. The main thing is to follow the instructions and be very careful about the entire process. Good luck!
